Not merely shifting left

inclusivity's challenge is that it’s often treated as an afterthought—something to be fixed late in the process rather than designed intentionally from the start. As the Inclusive Design Lead on the CVS Health app, I made it a priority to shift inclusivity as far left as possible in the Double Diamond process, ensuring accessibility was considered before a single wireframe was created.

During Discovery and Definition, the team and I worked closely with people with disabilities, aging populations, and caregivers to uncover pain points in digital health experiences. By integrating their insights early, we avoided costly redesigns and ensured that every design decision was grounded in real user needs. This proactive approach meant that inclusivity was baked into the foundation of the app, rather than being layered on as an afterthought.

Commitment to Standard

Ensuring a commitment to inclusivity extends beyond best practices—we set out to be the industry leader in digital inclusivity. To achieve this, we rigorously aligned the app’s design with WCAG 2.2 AA+ standards approach at every stage. The team's goal wasn’t just to meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards—it was to set a new benchmark for accessibility in digital health. From the start, we treated accessibility as a non-negotiable requirement rather than just a checklist item. By prioritizing inclusive design at every stage, we didn’t just create an app that met legal standards—we built a digital health experience that truly works for everyone.
